In Ayurveda, the body follows nature's rhythm throughout the day, governed by the three doshas: Kapha, Pitta, and Vata. By understanding and adapting to these cycles, we can optimise our digestion, energy, and well-being.
The morning is characterised by Kapha's calm and grounding energy. It is best to wake up early (preferably before 6 am) to avoid sluggishness. Eat a light breakfast, preferably warm and spicy food that gently stimulates digestion. This is also a good time for movement, such as yoga or a brisk walk.
When the sun is at its highest, so is our digestive fire (Agni). This is the best time for the day's largest meal. Choose nutritious and balanced food to fuel your body. Focus and mental clarity are also at their strongest, so take the opportunity to undertake more demanding tasks.
As the afternoon progresses, Vata's light and mobile energy increases. This is a time for creativity, communication, and movement. A light snack can help keep energy levels stable, but avoid heavy foods. Perfect for social activities or lighter work.
As evening approaches, Kapha returns and the body begins to wind down. Dinner should be light and warm, preferably before 7 p.m., to avoid burdening digestion during the night. Choose calming activities such as meditation, reading, or gentle stretching to prepare the body for sleep.
During the night, the body recovers and purifies itself.
Between 10 pm and 2 am, Pitta predominates, which is why you might feel energetic or hungry if you are up late.
Between 02:00 and 06:00, Vata governs, leading to an increase in dreams and mental activity.
Going to bed before 10 pm provides deep and restorative sleep.
