Questions & Answers

Here you will find answers to questions that people often have before booking or starting a treatment. Is something missing? Please feel free to get in touch and I will help you further.

What is Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an original Indian, natural and time-tested health system with a focus on preventive care through balance for body, mind, and soul.

Each person has a unique balance of Vata (space & air), Pitta (fire & water), and Kapha (earth & water) – the so-called doshas. When a person's doshas are out of balance, their vulnerability to illness and discomfort increases.

Ancient Ayurvedic wisdom offers guidance on how to live in harmony with one's dosha, and how to balance imbalances through diet, exercise, daily rituals, social interaction, and other lifestyle factors. Ayurveda offers healing methods such as detox (Panchakarma), massage, and treatments.

Is Ayurveda an evidence-based science?

Yes - the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda is built on theories that have been tested over a long time through observation, trial and experimentation.

Ayurveda is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as the world's oldest complete healthcare system.

Research conducted at reputable Ayurvedic institutions is registered in clinical trial registries – the same type of platform used for all medical research. Clinical studies are published in recognised medical journals worldwide. Ayurveda also uses modern research methods alongside pharmacological and pharmacognostic studies to prove efficacy and quality.

Indian Ayurvedic medicine companies are closely monitored to maintain high standards; they receive good manufacturing practice certifications and are encouraged to register clinical trials.

What does ”authentic Panchakarma” mean?

Undergoing a Panchakarma is more than a spa or wellness holiday – it is an individual, healing process, and the experience will be different for each person.

It is a common misconception that a ”real” PK always involves drinking ghee for 3-5 days, followed by detoxification, and eating the same khichdi meal every day. However, the actual procedure is much more personal and tailored.

Doctors consider factors such as: age, bio-energies/dosha, imbalances, the state of digestion, the stage of illness, the amount of ama (toxins), where in the body the toxins are located, and many other aspects - before deciding which detox method is most appropriate. Depending on your condition and how you respond, you may receive several detox treatments, but it is very unusual for a person to undergo all five methods.

If the toxins are deep-seated, external and internal oleation (snehana) can be chosen. This may involve drinking ghee or oil, or mixing them into soup or rice. Alternatively, a medicated oil enema, oil drops in the ears, oil massage, baths, or local oil treatments (e.g., for knees, lower back, etc.) may be the right treatment.

Following oil treatment, fomentation (Svédana) with external dry or moist heat is applied – this can include herbal compresses, herbal baths, steam therapy, mild exercise or yoga, among other things. Simultaneously, digestion is improved and undigested matter (ama) is removed with herbal decoctions.

All these steps are important for clearing deep-seated toxins from the tissues. When the body is ready, a detox method is chosen. In some cases, the toxins are already ripe for removal – in such instances, fomentation or oleation is not needed. In these cases, it is important to remove the toxins as soon as possible.

Does Oneworld offer pre-defined packages or specific programmes?

No — they don't have pre-designed packages on their website, as each person's constitution, biological balance, digestion, and physical and mental status are evaluated during an initial consultation. Only then is it determined which type of Panchakarma detox and treatment is suitable for you. Ayurveda is personal — there is no “one size fits all”.

How is the length of my Panchakarma calculated?

The programmes are listed in number of nights (not days), and start the morning after your arrival.

  • On Oneworld Ayurveda Tegallalang There are programmes for 7, 10, 14, 21, or 28 nights. On the final day, a morning treatment is offered if your travel plans allow. The programme can commence at any time, subject to availability.
  • On Oneworld Ayurveda Ubud There are programmes for 7, 14 or 21 nights. There is no treatment on the last day, and the programme concludes at 11:00. At the Ubud centre, programmes start every Sunday according to the calendar.
Will I be fasting during the stay?

No - food is an important part of Panchakarma. You will be served well-balanced meals according to Ayurvedic guidelines. As a rule, three nutritious meals are served per day.

During detox days, you receive a special diet with an amount of food tailored for the detox to have maximum effect.

Can I continue with my usual training during my stay?

During a Panchakarma detox, it is recommended that you do not engage in high-intensity exercise. Instead, gentle yoga and meditation are offered twice a day, as well as organised walks – for example, through the rice paddies or the herb garden.

What is included in the Panchakarma programme?

The price is all-inclusive: accommodation, meals, daily treatments twice a day, initial diagnosis, daily doctor's consultations, yoga, meditation, herb walks, transport to and from the airport, etc. Taxes and service charges are included.

What does a typical day during my Panchakarma look like?

The days vary significantly depending on the individual's treatment phase. Here's an example:

  • You wake early to the sound of a gong. Yoga and meditation in the yoga hall overlooking the rice fields — or a walk in the garden or on the balcony.
  • Breakfast.
  • Meeting with the doctor and treatments at the treatment centre. The duration and number of treatments vary.
  • In the morning, there can be lectures on Ayurveda or cooking sessions. After lunch, there's rest and free time, followed by afternoon therapies. Sometimes, there's a hike in the rice fields.
  • The evening offers yoga and meditation, as well as dinner.
Before planning a Panchakarma, you should know that it is a deep detoxification and rejuvenation therapy from Ayurveda. It requires careful preparation and is best undertaken with the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. Here's what you should know:* **Consultation is essential:** You need a thorough consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor to assess your individual constitution (dosha), current health status, and any imbalances. They will determine if Panchakarma is suitable for you and tailor the treatment plan accordingly. * **It's a multi-stage process:** Panchakarma isn't a single treatment but a series of therapies. It typically involves: * **Poorvakarma (Pre-treatment):** This phase prepares your body. It involves internal oil oleation (Snehana) and fomentation (Swedana) to loosen toxins. This can last for several days. * **Pradhankarma (Main treatment):** This is the core detoxification stage where the actual elimination procedures are performed (e.g., Vamana - therapeutic vomiting, Virechana - purgation, Basti - enemas, Nasya - nasal administration, Rakta Mokshana - bloodletting if indicated). The specific procedures depend on your constitution and imbalances. * **Paschatkarma (Post-treatment):** This phase is crucial for reintroducing food and rebuilding your system. It involves specific dietary guidelines (Samsarjana Krama) and rejuvenating therapies (Rasayana) to restore vitality and prevent future toxin build-up. * **Dietary and lifestyle changes are fundamental:** You'll need to follow strict dietary and lifestyle recommendations before, during, and after the Panchakarma. This usually involves eating simple, easily digestible foods, avoiding certain food groups (like processed foods, heavy, fried, or fermented items), and maintaining a regular sleep schedule. * **Time commitment:** Panchakarma is not a quick fix. The entire process, including pre-treatment, main treatment, and post-treatment, can range from a few days to several weeks, depending on your needs and the practitioner's recommendations. * **Potential side effects:** While generally safe, some temporary side effects can occur as toxins are released, such as fatigue, mild nausea, or changes in bowel movements. A good practitioner will help you manage these. * **Choose a reputable centre/practitioner:** It's vital to undergo Panchakarma at a reputable Ayurvedic centre or with an experienced practitioner who has a deep understanding of the therapies and can ensure they are performed safely and effectively. * **It's not for everyone:** Panchakarma is contraindicated for certain conditions, such as acute illnesses, pregnancy, very old or very young individuals, or those with specific chronic diseases. This is why consultation is so important. * **Mindset matters:** Approach Panchakarma with an open mind and a willingness to commit to the process. It's a journey of healing and self-discovery.In summary, plan for Panchakarma with professional guidance, be prepared for significant dietary and lifestyle adjustments, and allocate sufficient time for the entire process.
  • If you are planning to extend your holiday before or after your Panchakarma, it is best to do so before your Panchakarma – not immediately after. The body begins a deep healing process which can continue long after the last day of treatment. Allow the body to gradually return to normal activities. We recommend a recovery period as long as the number of days your PK was – for example, 10 days after a 10-day PK.
  • During authentic PK, you should rest, stay warm, and avoid strong sun and wind. Avoid sunbathing, swimming, shopping in Ubud, or excursions. Focus inwards a lot – observe thoughts and feelings. PK is a gift to body, mind, and soul.
  • Please prepare your body before the trip:
  • Eat vegetarian food 2–3 days (or longer) before arrival.
  • Reduce/refrain from smoking and alcohol.
  • Cut down on coffee, sugar, fizzy drinks, and junk food.
  • Pack properly and keep warm during your flight.
Are there any restrictions under the programme?

Yes. For Panchakarma to be effective, you should avoid:

  • Swimming,
  • Excursions,
  • Sun or strong wind,
  • Sexual activities,
  • Other stimulating activities.

These restrictions support healing and prevent side effects. Trust your doctor's recommendations.

Do I need to bring anything special?

When your booking is confirmed, you will receive an email with all the practical information. You need to bring:

  • Yoga clothing if you wish to participate in yoga - yoga mats are available on-site.
  • Because the climate is tropical, you do not need many warm clothes - possibly a shawl or thin cardigan.
  • As oil treatments are used, clothes may become stained – do not bring expensive clothing. You will be provided with a bathrobe, sarong, and flip-flops to use.
  • You can bring a toothbrush, toothpaste, lotion, comb, etc. Insect repellent is available, but you can bring your own if you wish.
  • If you wish, you can bring items to donate to the village – clothes, shoes, hats, a used laptop, etc. It is not essential, but it will be appreciated.
Check-in and check-out times

Tegalalang

  • Check-in: 14:00
  • Check-out is at 12:00 (including morning treatment and lunch). We try to accommodate late check-outs, but it is not guaranteed. If your flight departs late and you need to leave your room at 12:00, you can store your luggage and use the showers in the treatment centre.

Ubud:

  • Check-in: 15:00
  • Checkout: 11:00. No treatments or lunch on the last day. Late checkouts can sometimes be arranged, but nothing is guaranteed. You can store luggage at reception and relax in communal areas or the treatment centre's relaxation zones. It is also possible to book additional treatments for a fee.
I'm pregnant - can I still do Panchakarma?

During pregnancy, Ayurvedic treatments can help with stiffness, pain, improved sleep, and reduced cramps. You can also receive dietary advice and specific pregnancy guidelines.

Detox or Panchakarma therapies such as emetics, purgation, nasal treatments and enemas are not recommended during pregnancy. Treatments that raise body temperature or induce sweating – for example, poultices – should be avoided in all trimesters, except possibly near to labour.

Guests should bring all medical documents and supplements to ensure continuity of care. Long-haul flights are generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially during the first and last trimesters. A pre-travel consultation with a doctor will take place before participation is confirmed.
