Ayurveda – April

April is a turning point where the cool, damp heaviness of Kapha meets the increasing heat and intensity of Pitta.🔥💧

We are moving deeper into the energy of spring, which can often feel like a mix of inertia, swelling, and sudden inner heat.

Within Ayurveda, it is now recommended to lean towards bitter, pungent, and astringent tastes. These help to lighten and dry up Kapha, while also gently cooling and cleansing the blood. This can be particularly supportive for inflammation, skin rashes, sore throats, or that general feeling of “spring heat” in the body.

Think of foods that both awaken digestion (agni), clear stagnation, and help the body release excess fluid.

Food + effect (as in the picture):
🫜 Beetroot (root + greens) - supports the liver and purifies the blood while keeping circulation going
🌱 Microgreens - concentrated bitter energy that cuts through heaviness
🍊 Grapefruit – light and dehydrating, aids in sluggish digestion
🥬 Swiss chard – rich in minerals and mildly detoxifying for the blood
🌿 Dandelion leaf - a classic bitter support that clears heat and supports the liver
🫙 Fermented foods - strengthen agni and give the gut a quick boost
🌾 Fennel (bulb) - light, slightly sweet and aids digestion without increasing heat
🌽 Maize – drying and grounding, balances excess moisture
🌰 Cinnamon - warming and stimulates circulation and digestion
🌶️ Cayenne pepper - ignites agni and breaks stagnation
⚫ Black pepper - sharp and penetrating, clears the body's channels
🌿 Chives - mildly pungent, helps to move Kapha
🧅 Onion - warming and helps to dissolve phlegm and stagnation
🧄 Garlic - stimulating and antimicrobial
🌿 Watercress - peppery and helps to cleanse the blood of heat
🥗 Rocket - bitter and light, perfect for spring detox
🌱 Asparagus - a diuretic and helps the body release fluid

Where healing begins,

and harmony returns.
