Do you feel heavy after the food?
Feeling sick?
Slimey?
Slow?
Tired after eating?
Feeling full for a long time without the food really feeling digested?
These are classic signs that kapha has accumulated in the stomach and that the digestive fire (agni) needs a little support.
In Ayurveda, kapha is described as cold, heavy, slow, moist and stable. These are wonderful qualities when they are in balance, providing calm, endurance and strength.
However, when kapha becomes too dominant, digestion can feel sluggish. Food stays in the stomach for too long, appetite decreases, and the body may start to produce more mucus and heaviness.
Kapha therefore needs:
- Heat
- Movement
- Lightness
- Stimulant
This is why kapha loves:
- Fresh ginger
- Black pepper
- Trikatu
- Warming spices
- Pungent (strong) flavour
A cup of warm ginger tea before a meal can sometimes work wonders for a sluggish kapha digestion.
What often worsens the condition is:
- Cold drinks
- Too much dairy
- Heavy and rich meals
- Large quantities of raw vegetables and salad
- Eating late in the evening
So sometimes it's not about eating less – but about stoking the fire a little more.
No more cold. No more weight. Without fire.
When agni springs to life, the body often begins to do the same. Do you recognise that?
