ADHD from an ayurvedic perspective, when the mind cannot land

An increasing number of people are now receiving an ADHD diagnosis or recognising themselves in symptoms such as:

      • Hard to concentrate
      • Racing thoughts
      • Restlessness impulsivity
      • Hypersensitivity to sound, light and stimuli
      • Difficulty sleeping
      • The feeling of never being able to switch off

Ayurveda does not use the term ADHD, but for thousands of years it has described conditions that resemble these symptoms. It does not view this as you being broken or wrong. Rather, it is seen as a nervous system that has lost its grounding and needs help to find its way back to balance.

From an ayurvedic perspective, it is often about an imbalance in Prana Vata, the subdosha that governs the brain's communication, the nervous system, attention and how we process sensory impressions. When Prana Vata becomes elevated, the mind can become like a radio playing on ten channels at the same time.
  • The thoughts are bouncing.
  • Focus is lost.
  • The body wants to move.
  • The nervous system is in overdrive.
Within Ayurveda, therefore, one looks not only at the brain but at the whole person:
  • How does digestion work?
  • How is the sleep?
  • Is there a lot of stress or anxiety?
  • What does today's routine look like?
  • How much stimulation does the nervous system receive?
  • Are there nutrients that actually reach the brain and nervous tissue?
The classical texts describe how the nervous system is calmed through regularity, nourishment and grounding activities.

Therefore, it is often recommended:
  • Breathing exercises like Nadi Shodhana and Bhramari
  • Warm, nourishing and easily digestible food
  • Good sleep hygiene and regular routines
  • Daily oil massage (Abhyanga) to pacify Vata
Within Ayurveda, herbs such as Brahmi, Gotu Kola, Shankhapushpi and Jatamansi have traditionally been used to support focus, memory and mental clarity.

The interesting thing is that much of what Ayurveda has recommended for thousands of years is today also supported by modern research regarding nervous system regulation, sleep, stress management, breathing and brain health.

That doesn't mean Ayurveda “cures ADHD”.
But for many, an Ayurvedic approach can contribute to:

  • Better focus
  • More mental clarity
  • Deeper sleep
  • Less stress
  • Better emotional regulation
  • A calmer nervous system
Perhaps the most important question is not always:
“How do I get rid of my symptoms?”

Without:
“How do I create the best conditions for my nervous system to function optimally?”

Where healing begins,

and harmony returns.
