When we hear the word sweet, many of us immediately think of sugar, sweets and biscuits.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Yet within Ayurveda, the sweet taste, Madhura Rasa, signifies something much greater.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n
Ayurveda describes six tastes:<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\"\ud83c\udf38\"<\/span> S\u00f6tt – Madhura<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\"\ud83c\udf4b\"<\/span> Surt – Amla<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\"\ud83e\uddc2\"<\/span> Salt – Lavana<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\"\ud83c\udf36\ufe0f\"<\/span> Stark\/pikant – Katu<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\"\ud83c\udf3f\"<\/span> Bitter – Tikta<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\"\ud83c\udf42\"<\/span> Sammandragande – Kashaya<\/p>\n

Madhura Rasa consists primarily of the elements earth (Prithvi) and water (Jala). Therefore, it is associated with qualities such as heaviness, softness, stability, coolness and nourishment.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
The sweet taste is considered to be building and nourishing for the body's tissues and can provide a sense of grounding, contentment and calm.<\/p>\n

But here is something I find especially interesting:<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\"\ud83d\udc97\"<\/span> In Ayurveda, \u201csweetness\u201d can also be understood as something we need in life, not just on the plate.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
    \n
  • Safety<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Proximity<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Love<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Villa<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Joy<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Touch<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Belonging<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Feeling held and looked after<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n

    When life contains very little of this, we can sometimes try to find quick comfort elsewhere, and for many that becomes through food.<\/p>\n

    <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    \n
    Perhaps you recognise it?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    After a stressful or lonely day, the craving for chocolate hits.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    When we are exhausted, we want something sweet.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    When life feels empty, we look for something that quickly gives a sense of reward and satisfaction.<\/p>\n

    <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    \n
    Of course, that doesn't mean all cravings or binge eating issues are due to a \u201clack of Madhura\u201d. Eating behaviours are complex and can have biological, psychological as well as social causes. However, the Ayurvedic idea can give us an interesting question to ask:<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    What is it that I'm actually longing for right now?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    Is it really chocolate?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    Or do I need to rest?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    Proximity?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    Security?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    Joy?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    Community?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    Something enjoyable and creative?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    A slower pace?<\/p>\n

    <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Madhura Rasa can therefore be cultivated even outside the kitchen. It could be resting without a guilty conscience, dancing, painting, gardening, reading a book, being in nature, spending time with people who make you feel safe, or simply creating more space for enjoyment and recovery.<\/p>\n

    And of course, Madhura is also found in the food, far beyond refined sugar. For example:<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    \n
    \"\ud83c\udf34\"<\/span> Dates and figs<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    \"\ud83c\udf60\"<\/span> Sweet potato<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    \"\ud83c\udf83\"<\/span> Pump<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    \"\ud83e\udd65\"<\/span> Coconut<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    \"\ud83c\udf30\"<\/span> Soaked almonds<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    \"\ud83c\udf31\"<\/span> Mung dal<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    \"\ud83e\udd55\"<\/span> Root vegetables<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
    \n
    \"\ud83e\udd5b\"<\/span> Milk and ghee for those who feel well on it<\/p>\n

    But as always within Ayurveda, balance and individual adaptation are key. Too much Madhura can become heavy and particularly increase Kapha, whereas the right amount can be deeply nourishing and grounding.<\/p>\n

    \"\u2728\"<\/span> So next time the sugar craving hits, instead of immediately judging or trying to discipline it away, perhaps you can become a little curious.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
